Lead Poisoning In Tap-Water Supply: Get the Facts about the Threat.

Environmental Safety: Soil can pick up lead from exterior paint or other sources such as past use of leaded gas in cars. Additionally, children playing in yards can ingest or inhale lead dust.
CASE IN POINT: This house located in the County Of Santa Barbara was badly lead contaminated due to several factors, including an irresponsable un-maintainated house and the wrong materials used when this house had the plumbing system installed.

“A painter and decorator aged 40 years presented with a 6 week history of malaise, abdominal cramps, nausea, arthralgia and mild mental impairment. He had previously been working in a Georgian building in Bath using an industrial blowtorch and sander to remove paint. Two of the three floors had timber-panelled walls; all had 8 to 10 coats of paint and some were clearly very old. Although he had acquired a new respirator he did not wear it when other workmen were burning off or sanding in other rooms on the same floor, and during breaks he ate, drank and smoked cigarettes in the same building. No measurements of atmospheric lead concentrations were made. Investigation by the patient's general practitioner showed a blood lead of 4.18 -l-1 (87.1 ug 100 ml-1) and he was referred for treatment.”

Normally when PLUMBERS USE lead type solder to weld together two or more pieces of copper pipes and fittings the water becomes contaminated and cause one or more of the followings:

City of Santa Barbara Tap Water Leaded Poisoned Help:

1-Upgrade Plumbing Pipes to new Type "L" copper pipes.
If your house has galvanized pipes in the water system, then you will be better of with copper pipes. Be aware that directly joining two different types of metals, in this case, steel and copper, can cause rapid corrosion at the joint (called dielectric corrosion). To limit this problem, make the steel/copper connections with special dielectric unions rather than with a regular coupling. This type of union separates the two metals with a rubber washer and plastic sleeve so they don't actually touch each other.

2- Flushing Your Water Heater and the Truth about Sediment.
Is your water heater making odd noises? Does it seem you run out of hot water sooner than you used to? Maybe it’s time to flush the sediment out of your water heater.

I often see it stated that a build up of sediment in the bottom of your gas water heater leads to lower efficiency and contamination of tap water. This would at first seem to make sense. The flames are heating the bottom of the tank, and if there is a thick layer of sediment then maybe it would be harder to heat the water in the tank and lead to lower efficiency.

3- Plumbing Problems & Tubs Holding Water.
Bathtub-related plumbing problems can be difficult to diagnose and can result in property damage and high water bills. Some problems may affect your tub's ability to hold water. Before jumping to conclusions, check your tub and plumbing thoroughly to identify the source of the problem. Many issues can be easily fixed without an expensive call to the plumber.Other issues are only addressed by adding another bathroom or remodeling you bathrooms.

»» How do I know if my home contains lead paint?
Homes built prior to 1978 may contain lead-based paint.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 87 percent of homes built before 1940 have some lead-based paint while 24 percent of homes built between 1960 and 1978 have some lead-based paint.
So what can you do? You can hire a certified professional to check for lead-based paint in your home. To find a certified inspector, call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (5323).
You may also test using a lead test kit. Test kits should be recognized by the EPA and are available at hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, etc.
